Continuing Education (CE) Credits for Nurses: What They Are and Why They Matter

Continuing Education (CE) credits are an essential part of a nurse’s career. Whether you are a new nurse navigating license requirements or a seasoned nurse looking to keep your skills sharp, CE credits will remain a constant throughout your nursing journey. More than just a requirement to check off your list, CE credits are extremely beneficial in keeping your knowledge up to date, helping you to feel confident in complex clinical situations and opening doors in your career.

Let’s break down what CE credits are, why they matter, and how to make the most of them throughout your nursing career.

What exactly are CE credits?

Continuing education credits in the simplest terms are units to measure the time that nurses spend in approved educational activities that help them stay up to date in their field. In most cases, 1 CE credit equals one hour of an approved educational activity like a course, workshop, or webinar. Each state has its own different CE requirements for nurses. This is why you should always check with your state board of nursing for the most current and accurate CE requirements. Organizations have to be approved in order to be official CE providers. Under all of Nicole Kupchik’s courses, you will see an accreditation section noting that Nicole Kupchik Consulting, Inc. is an approved provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing”.

Why do CE credits matter?

At the bare minimum, continuing education credits matter because they are a required step in renewing your license. Each state requires a set amount of CE credits to maintain an active RN license. For example, Washington state nurses must renew their RN license annually by their birthday and you must have 8 hours of credits at the time of renewal. Again, this varies from state to state so be sure to check your state’s individual requirements There are also CE requirements in order to renew your certifications. For example, if you are CCRN certified, you must obtain 100 CEs every 3 years to renew.

However, CE credits are not just for compliance, but for growth. In a field as ever-changing and high-stakes as nursing, staying current is vital. New research, protocols and technologies are evolving in healthcare. CE gives nurses the tools to stay up to date and you can take pride in your practice through improving your clinical knowledge!

Lastly, for nurses with career goals such as moving into education, leadership, or advanced practice, CE’s can also act as a stepping stone to achieve this. The more initiative you take to increase your knowledge, the more impact you can make. At its best, continuing education isn’t just about maintaining a license, it’s about elevating care.
