These subspecialty credentials highlight your advanced knowledge in cardiac care and can open doors to new professional opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s how you can begin the next endeavor in your certification journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What exactly\u00a0are the\u00a0CMC\u00ae\u00a0and CSC\u00ae\u00a0Certifications?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cardiac Medicine Certification (CMC<strong>\u00ae<\/strong>)and Cardiac Surgery Certification (CSC<strong>\u00ae)<\/strong>&nbsp;are subspecialty certifications for nurses who have already passed the CCRN\u00ae or PCCN\u00ae exam. These certifications are a way for nurses to demonstrate their expert knowledge when caring for cardiac medicine and cardiac surgery patients, respectively.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both exams are 90 questions and last two hours. The CMC<strong>\u00ae<\/strong> exam covers cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular conditions while the CSC<strong>\u00ae <\/strong>exam covers cardiac procedures and complications. There are key content differences between each exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who should take\u00a0the CMC\u00ae\u00a0Exam?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CMC<strong>\u00ae\u00a0<\/strong>exam covers care given to acutely\/critically ill adult cardiac medicine patients. It is geared towards certified nurses, currently practicing in areas such as CCU, combined ICU\/CCU, medical ICU, telemetry, progressive care, heart failure clinics\/home care, interventional cardiology, cardiac catheterization labs, and\/or electrophysiology units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who should\u00a0take the CSC\u00ae\u00a0exam?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CSC<strong>\u00ae<\/strong>\u00a0exam covers care provided to acutely\/critically ill adult cardiac surgery patients. It is geared toward certified nurses, currently working in areas such as cardiovascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, or post-anesthesia care units, caring for cardiac surgery patients in the first 48 hours postoperatively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the requirements\u00a0for taking\u00a0each\u00a0exam?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To be eligible to sit for the&nbsp;CMC\u00ae&nbsp;or CSC\u00ae&nbsp;exam, you must:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have a current, unencumbered RN or APRN license in the U.S. or current, nationally accredited (ABSNC or NCCA) clinical nursing specialty certification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice as an RN or APRN for <strong>1,750<\/strong> hours in direct care of acutely\/critically ill adult patients during the previous two years, with <strong>875<\/strong> of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application. Of those <strong>1,750 <\/strong>hours, <strong>875<\/strong> must be in the care of acutely\/critically ill adult cardiac patients for CMC, or acutely\/critically ill adult cardiac surgery patients within the first 48 hours postoperatively for CSC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0OR Practice as an RN or APRN for at least five years with a minimum of <strong>2,000<\/strong> hours in the direct care of acutely\/critically ill adult patients, with <strong>144<\/strong> of those hours accrued in the most recent year preceding application. Of those <strong>2,000 <\/strong>hours, <strong>1,000<\/strong> must be in the direct care of acutely\/critically ill adult cardiac patients for CMC, or acutely\/critically ill adult cardiac surgery patients within the first 48 hours postoperatively for CSC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may\u00a0apply online\u00a0or via paper application for\u00a0certification exams on AACN\u2019s website.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay the exam fee:\u00a0<strong>$145<\/strong>\u00a0for AACN members and\u00a0<strong>$235<\/strong>\u00a0for nonmembers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How long does\u00a0each\u00a0certification last?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Once you pass the CMC\u00ae&nbsp;\/ CSC\u00ae&nbsp;Exam, you are certified for&nbsp;three&nbsp;years. You will not be admitted if you arrive more than 15 minutes past your scheduled time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make sure you bring a government-issued ID to the exam center. It is required to sit for the exam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Acceptable forms of ID include:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Driver\u2019s License<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State \/ Province ID Card<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>International Travel Passport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0U.S. Visa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just make sure that the name on the ID that you present is the same as the name on your AACN record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After you complete your exam,&nbsp;your results will appear on-screen&nbsp;immediately.&nbsp;You will receive a more in-depth score&nbsp;report within 24&nbsp;to&nbsp;48 hours&nbsp;post-exam&nbsp;completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happens if you fail the exam?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Failing the exam, although disappointing, is not the end of the world!
