Why Nurses Delay Certification & What Actually Helps Them Move Forward

If you’ve been putting off certification, you’re far from alone and it’s certainly not a reflection of your dedication or ability as a nurse.

Recently Nicole held a free CCRN® & PCCN® “Power Hour” webinar to give sneak peek at the upcoming live certification review and nurses opened up about what’s really been holding them back. Their responses were honest, vulnerable, and incredibly common:

“I’ve been waiting to take it for 5 years. I have test anxiety.”

“I’ve bought the course twice… 4 years later, still haven’t taken it.”

“Working night shift in the ICU makes it so hard to find motivation to study.”

“I get overwhelmed with all the information and then don’t study.”

“Burnout and school have delayed me for years.”

“I’ve put it off for EIGHT years.”

These aren’t isolated experiences; they reflect a broader reality in nursing.

The Real Barriers to Certification

Most nurses want to get certified. They care deeply about their professional growth, their patients, and their practice. But wanting something and feeling able to pursue it are two very different things.

Common barriers include:

1. Test Anxiety
Even highly skilled clinicians can feel paralyzed by the pressure of a high-stakes exam.

2. Burnout
After long shifts, emotional strain, and chronic understaffing, studying often feels impossible.

3. Overwhelm
There is so much content to learn making it hard to know where to start.

4. Life Demands
Balancing work, school, family, and personal responsibilities leaves little room for focused study.

Over time, these challenges can snowball and what starts as a short delay can stretch into years.

What Actually Makes a Difference

Here’s the encouraging part: it doesn’t take a complete life overhaul to shift momentum.

After just one 60-minute session, many nurses reported a noticeable change in how they felt:

“This has given me confidence and made me excited to study for CCRN®.”

“I’ve waited a handful of years as well, but this made me more excited to take the test.”

“Getting questions right today gave me confidence to go for it.”

“Been putting it off because of burnout, but I’m going to look into it again.”

What changed? Confidence.

When nurses feel supported, see small wins, and realize they can succeed, everything shifts. Studying for certification no longer feels like an overwhelming burden, it becomes a manageable, even motivating, next step.

You’re Closer Than You Think

Delaying certification doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It often just means you’ve been navigating a demanding profession without the support you needed.

But momentum can come back quickly with the right environment and encouragement.

Ready to Take the First Step?

The Power Hour on-demand webinar was designed to help you rebuild confidence, walk through practice questions, and finally feel like certification is within reach. It’s a great way to ease back in especially if it’s been months (or years) since you last studied.

And if you’re ready for more structure and accountability, the June 2026 CCRN® & PCCN® Live Certification Review Series provides a guided, supportive approach to help you stay consistent so you feel exam ready.

You don’t have to figure this out alone and you don’t have to wait any longer to start.
